Howdy blogging world – nice as heck to finally meet ya. My first blog post – how *millennial* of me! Feels as good as a $7 avocado toast tastes.
As we enter a new decade, like many others I took time to reflect on all that’s happened in the last 10 years of my life. 18-28, my first decade of adulthood. A defining decade at that, full of milestones and transition: high school, college, post-grad, corporate life, graduate school, cross country moves, breakups, makeups, loss, and adventure.
My early twenties were a whirlwind. In college, you find your identity in different ways. You choose a major, join a sorority, ride and die for your football team (go bucks), and find new friends who become family. But after college, it’s a little different. There’s not a great roadmap to help navigate what’s next. There’s a new weight as you try to set the foundation for the rest of your life. Do I want to be in this cubical forever? Am I going to marry this person I’m dating? What’s my passion and where can I find it?
These questions for me led to a lot of self-exploration. Getting to know yourself is weird – and oddly difficult. The constant change and ups and downs in my early twenties gave me the opportunity to explore depths of myself I didn’t know before.
I knew I had a strong set of personal values which helped guide my decisions, but they’ve certainly evolved over time. Rather than clinging to find my identity in a set of values, I’m learning to pause to re-evaluate from time to time.
I’m finding this flexibility is where the real magic lies. Give yourself permission to question your norms, try new things, adjust your values. Accept that you can be some things, sometimes, without sacrificing your identity.
Sometimes I’m a corporate employee and sometimes I’m a writer.
